While the original plans of traveling to Marseille were cancelled, Caelan, Rick & Sam got to enjoy a couple of days in Paris sight-seeing, a weekend in Mulhouse participating in game demonstrations/promotions, sight-seeing one evening in Basel, Switzerland and conducting a couple of high school clinics in Strasbourg instead. The Canadian team is grateful for the additional experiences and a sincere "thank you" goes out to Julian, of the Paris Sepak Takraw club, the Mulhouse Sepak Takraw club and France Sepak Takraw Association for all there assistance and arrangements that made our visit in France a memorable one.

The newly formed Sepak Takraw Saskatchewan helped STAC host the 2009 Canadian Open at Western Christian College, Aug. 1 & 2. A nice field of 8 teams in the senior men’s division, competed in two pools of four. Players/teams were from BC, AB, SK and ON, as well as from USA, featuring Steven Kinnett, a one-legged player. Steven lost his leg to cancer when he was 14 years old, but has never let that stop him from anything.
Four of the eight senior men’s teams were from Regina, and three of them advanced through to the finals, along with a team from Calgary. In the end, “REGINA SK” won the bronze medal by beating "Regina S.O.9 Honda" (actually Saskatchewan's elite junior boy's team) in two straight sets, 21-12 and 21-10. Then CALGARY 1 earned the gold medal in an intense nail-biter of a final match that went right down to the wire against REGINA SUPERFLY who had to settle for the silver medal, with the score being 21-17, 17-21, and then 17-16 in the tie-break set. Winding up the evening was a final exhibition match between USA and Canada (made up of both Regina and Calgary players from the gold medal match). Having lost their previous matches, USA surprised everyone with an upset victory over Canada winning in two straight sets, 21-17 and 21-13.

Each year the Hmong American community in Minneapolis-St. Paul, MN, organize a very large July 4th weekend sports festival, which attracts about 40,000 mainly Hmong people from all over USA and Canada to attend. Whenever possible, the Sepak Takraw Association of Canada or players from the Regina club, try to participate in the Sepak Takraw tournament that is part of this festival. This year Rick & Caelan made the 13-hour drive and joined with a couple players from Chicago to make a team and play just for fun with various teams. Great thanks to Pheng Vang for his help and hospitality in hosting us all!

Saskatchewan's provincial championship tournament has become an annual part of the Canada Day celebrations. The matches took place on the lawn right in front of the provincial legislative building. There were 5 senior men's regus and 1 junior men's regu all competing in a 1-pool round robin event. It was non-stop action all day, to the delight of an estimated 2000 plus spectators, while about 300 people tried it out for themselves on the three courts that were left open for public participation.
